Reel News The Hong Kong Jewish Film Festival e-Newsletter
October 2006

The festival is just around the corner and all the pieces are coming together. Tickets go on sale at the Palace IFC box office starting November 1st. Don't leave it to the last minute! Last year many of our screenings were sold out.

Even in Hong Kong, rarely a day goes by when we don't hear about Israeli soldiers fighting with Palestinian gunmen in Gaza. But what do we really know about the situation there? This year our festival looks deeper into the Israel-Palestine conflict. Is there hope for peace?

  • 10 Days in Gaza

This extraordinary film follows the dramatic Israeli disengagement from the Gaza Strip. On August 15, 2005, Israel embarked on a journey that changed it geographically, politically and historically. Though it lasted only 10 days, Israel's disengagement from the Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip and the northern West Bank marked a watershed event in the country's history. Mass demonstrations and bitter political battles deepened the bold division which cut through the social, political and economic strata of Israeli society, leaving many homeless and many more reeling from the traumatic event. This historically important and emotionally gripping film begins with the military closure of the Gaza Strip to civilian traffic, and ends with the last soldier that closed the Gaza's gates behind him, ending 38 years of Israeli occupation.

Filmmaker Dov Gil-Har will be in attendance.

From the River to the Sea

The entire world was surprised by last year's election of Hamas, a political and military organisation, to lead the Palestinian people. Beyond political analysis, filmmaker Pierre Rehov explores the real causes of this victory and revisits the history of Palestinians and their mythologies. Having spent months in Palestinian refugee camps, and asking questions to international analysts, Rehov presents a much clearer view of the real causes of a constantly derailed peace process. A very timely film given recent events in Israel.

Filmmaker Pierre Rehov will be in attendance.

The 7th Annual Hong Kong Jewish Film Festival - November 11 - 19. Tickets go on sale starting November 1st.

    18-J

Ten 10-minute short films by 10 of the most popular filmmakers in South America today. On July 18th, 1994, terrorists detonated a bomb-laden van in front of the AMIA Building in Buenos Aires, killing 86 people and wounding over 300 others. AMIA is the Argentina-Israeli Mutual Association, a charity, and, until most recently, it was the largest single incident of terrorism against Jews since World War II. Memories and impressions are presented in each filmmaker's unique and stylised way creating an evocative narrative of that tragic day.
